Business Development

When NCEASL/ADT launched its Business Development Unit in 2008, its objectives were to create a means of generating additional income for NCEASL’s Jaffna regional office, to empower and provide employment to local communities, to provide vocational training for school leavers and invest a percentage of the profits gained towards welfare work (self-employment for widows etc.).

NCEASL/ADT has expanded its reach by supporting and empowering a number of unemployed persons through its Business Development Unit. This project that began with creating employment opportunities for individuals in cement block making has now grown to provide loans for factories such as the Colombo Solid Foods Industry situated in Rajagiriya. The loan was given with the objective of supporting the owner to create even greater employment opportunities.

The Business Development Unit also provides training to school leavers on career development skills and Information Technology (IT). It launched a project in the first quarter of the year 2013 that provided school leavers and school teachers with training on spoken English and Sinhala so as to enable them to face interviews with confidence and secure employment. Part of the profits made by this unit is channelled as loans for war affected widows and other vulnerable communities to assist them in their self-employment ventures. Some of the livelihoods commenced by loan beneficiaries are running grocery stores, making short eats, packaged manioc chips and candles.
