U.S. Ambassador Visits NCEASL Office to Discuss Religious Freedom in Sri Lanka

Updated: Oct 7, 2022

On 12 September 2022, the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Ms Julie Chung, visited the NCEASL office and met with its leadership, including the General Secretary, Deshamanya Godfrey Yogarajah, Associate Secretary General, Ms Yamini Ravindran, and Director for Relief and Development, Mr Raghu Balachandran.

During the meeting, the NCEASL leadership briefed Ambassador Chung on current trends relating to the Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) in the country, expressed concerns about the arbitrary use of the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the ICCPR Act against minority communities and discussed the Alliance’s work on promoting FoRB and strengthening religious harmony.

In a tweet following the meeting, Ambassador Chung applauded the NCEASL’s efforts to bring together youth of all faiths, stating that “faith communities of all backgrounds enhance Sri Lanka’s diversity and contribute to its long-term stability and prosperity.”
